Jugg-Or-Not: Every Version Of Juggernaut, Ranked From Scrub To Unstoppable (2024)

The Juggernaut has been an institution of Marvel Comics since he first appeared inX-Men #12, written by Stan Lee with pencils by Jack Kirby, in July of 1965. Through more than 50 years of comic book publication, the character has made appearances across numerous titles involving other characters ranging from mutants to superheroes who use magic and mysticism and everything in-between. Juggernaut wasn't simply limited to comic books; the character has been used extensively across multiple forms of media, including animated series, live action films and tons of video games. As the character developed, he changed thanks to the hundreds of writers and artists who put their talents to work refining, redefining and reimagining the unstoppable force that is the Juggernaut.

As theJuggernaut developed, he has been retooled to include different versions of the original character or new characters who acquired the same powers. There have been modifications of the Juggernaut made for video games (to make it possible to beat him) and there have been costume changes, power alterations, origin story tweaks and complete overhauls such that there isn't simply a single Juggernaut in the Marvel Universe, there are dozens. Instead of racking and stacking each and every version of the Juggernaut there is, we decided to dive into the comics, video games, TV shows and movies to find the 25 who are different enough from one another to be considered separate. Throw them all in a ring and only the top guy would come out to stand as the strongest and most powerful version of the Juggernaut!

25 X-MEN: THE LAST STAND

It was something of a treat when the Juggernaut finally made a live-action appearance inX-Men: The Last Stand.The character was portrayed by Vinnie Jones who, let's face it, could probably bust through a brick wall even if he wasn't playing the Juggernaut in a motion picture.

In the film, the character was far weaker than he normally was depicted in the comics. His ability to never be stopped once he got moving was negated when he came in contact with a mutant capable ofcancelling out other mutant powers. This was a departure for the Juggernaut, who is not a mutant in canon. Perhaps not surprisingly, the fans didn't all go for it.

24 JUGGERDUCK

This isn't a joke. Howard the Duck became the Juggernaut... er... the Juggerduck in Thanos#13, written by Donny Cateswith pencils by Geoff Shaw. The character later popped up on the cover ofCosmic Ghost Rider #3 (due out in September 2018) as a member of the future Guardians of the Galaxy.

Unfortunately, there isn't much known about the extent of Juggerduck's powers in comparison with the other versions of Juggernaut just yet. Cates has been talking about and teasing the character all over social media so more details will emerge. Of course, he was dusted by Galactus in that issue, so only Cates knows if we'll ever see him again.

23 J2

In the alternate future timeline of the MC2 Marvel imprint, the Juggernaut is a vastly different character. J2, as he is known, is Zane Yama-Marko, the son of the original Juggernaut, Cain Marko. Instead of becoming a supervillain like his father, Zane went on to join the Avengers of his time, A-Next.

Zane inherited his father's powers allowing him to transform himself into an altered version of the original character. He created his own Juggernaut armor and tied his father's flannel shirt around his waist, making his own, unique style. Unlike his father, if he uses his powers for too long, they drain and he reverts back to his teenage form.

22 DEADPOOL 2

One of the best "surprises" (which everyone saw coming) in 2018'sDeadpool 2 was the inclusion of the Juggernaut. After finally making his appearance halfway through the film, audiences got to see a cinematic version of the character more like his comic book counterpart. This was a Juggernaut who was more than willing to pick up Deadpool and rip him in half.

Unbeknownst to the audience and pretty much anyone anywhere, Ryan Reynolds provided the motion capture for the character, which means the guy playing Deadpool ended up fighting himself. In terms of power level, this Juggernaut is at least as dangerous and deadly as his Earth-616 counterpart. Speaking of that version of the character...

21 X-MEN: MUTANT APOCALYPSE

When players finally meet Juggernaut inX-Men: Mutant Apocalypse for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES), the fight breaks out in a danger room simulation. As the player engages the hulking red brute, the background continuously changes, making the fight somewhat disorienting.

Beating the Juggernaut in this round is one of the easiest challenges in the entire game. He barely fights back, sort of blocks and just does a good impression of an unmoving target. Professor X may want to look into upgrading the Danger Room's software.

20 THE UNCANNY X-MEN

Back in 1989, LJN released The Uncanny X-Men for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Like most LJN titles, it tops many lists as one of the worst NES games ever made. The game was formatted into a 2D action platformer where players would take control of one of six X-Men characters who would go on a series of missions.

When Juggernaut popped into the screen, he was a bit different than you might remember. He shot some sort of strange fireballs from his fists at the player and was relatively easy to beat. When he was defeated, he blinked out of existence and left a disk the player could collect.

19 MARVEL ZOMBIES

When the Marvel Zombies ran rampant across their universe (Earth-2149), nobody was safe from infection. Wolverine quickly succumbed, leaving fans to wonder what his healing factor was even for, while mystical characters like the Juggernaut also fell victim to the plague.

When Galactus came to claim the Earth, the zombies put a stop to his plans by eating him. Before they could converge on the corpse, a fight broke out, squaring Wolverine off against Juggernaut. When the two came to blows, Logan's claws made short work of his enemy, leaving the cosmic snack to a sparse few "survivors."

18 MARVEL VS. CAPCOM

Juggernaut has appeared in numerous titles within theMarvel vs. Capcom universe of fighting games since the series first launched in 1996. Since that time, the character's depiction on screen has changed somewhat, but we are lumping them all into this one entry, seeing as they are pretty much the same across the board.

In the game, players can take control of the character and use his brute strength and fighting abilities to take on a slew of characters from both the Marvel and Capcom universes. As this is a fighting game, the characters are fairly balanced, leaving it up to each player's skills to win a fight.

17 THE SUPERHERO SQUADSHOW

The Superhero Squad Show, sometimes calledMarvel Superhero Squad, was an animated series and video game featuring the Avengers, X-Men and many associated characters from throughout the Marvel Universe. The series was based on a tie-in line of toys released by Hasbro.

The characters in the series were depicted in a cartoonish style rarely seen in the comics. Much of the action was relegated to silly comedy, and while the Juggernaut isn't as powerful (or aggressive) as he normally is, he still ranks up there in terms of ability. Of course, this is a children's show, so characters aren't portrayed as powerfully as they otherwise would be.

16 AGE OF APOCALYPSE

During theAge of Apocalypse event, the alternate reality of Earth-295 features a Juggernaut who was quite different from his Earth-616 counterpart. In this reality, Cain Marko absorbed the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak, gaining the powers of the Juggernaut. However, he took a much different path.

Following the death of his step-brother, he swore off violence, shaved his head, and became a monk after relocating to Avalon, which was a refuge located in the Savage Land. When Avalon became threatened, he was conflicted between his vow of non-violence and the desire to save his refuge. In the end, he had an aneurysm and passed away immediately.

15 SPIDER-MAN AND HIS AMAZING FRIENDS

The Juggernaut made an animated appearance in Spider-Man and His Amazing Friendsin an episode titled "A Firestar is Born" in the series' second season. While it has nothing to do with the Juggernaut, the episode, which aired on September 25, 1982, depicts the first animated appearance of Wolverine.

Juggernaut is depicted much like he was in the comics at the time. When Spider-Man attempts to stop him, he barely notices as he heads to Xavier's Mansion to confront his step-brother. The X-Men fail to stop him until Firestar teams up with Spider-Man and Iceman to remove his helmet so Professor X can mentally paralyze him.

14 X-MEN: LEGENDS

X-Men: Legends was an action roleplaying game, which allowed players to control one of four characters at a time. In the game's fifth boss fight, the Juggernaut bursts through the wall of the Xavier School for Gifted Students demanding to see Charles Xavier, and it's up to the players to stop him.

In the fight, the player has to knock off the Juggernaut's helmet so he can become susceptible to a telepathic attack while beating him all the while. The challenge comes from trying to keep the damage to the mansion at a minimum, as one could lose the fight if the Juggernaut causes too much destruction.

13 X-MEN: THE ANIMATED SERIES

X-Men: The Animated Series is one of the best cartoons to come out of the '90s (you probably have the opening theme music stuck in your head after just reading the title, don't you?). The show featured the X-Men as they battled their traditional enemies and featured some new characters as well.

One of the old guys the team came into conflict with on a repeated basis was, of course, the Juggernaut. In the cartoon, he was about as powerful as he was in the comics, but not as aggressive or destructive as he could have been. It was a children's show after all.

12 SPIDER-MAN: SHATTERED DIMENSIONS

The Juggernaut featured inSpider-Man: Shattered Dimensions is one who shows up for a rather difficult/annoying boss fight. In order to defeat him, you have to wear him down, which poses a problem seeing as he is constantly attacking the player by busting through walls and destroying anything you might grab hold of.

Juggernaut is strong in this game, but he continues to damage himself by crashing through the scenery, so much of the fight involved avoiding him until his damage meter runs down. Of course, right when you think you've beaten him, he trows you out of the arena and the story progresses.

11 X-MEN EVOLUTION

When the Juggernaut popped up inX-Men: Evolution fans immediately noticed something they still talk about today online: those silly golden clasps holding his helmet on. Other than that, his origin is changed such that the Gem of Cyttorak doesn't give him his powers exactly, it awakened the X-Gene dormant in his genetic code.

Even with this change, he is still similar to his comic book counterpart. The Juggernaut ofX-Men: Evolution is incredibly strong, ruthlessly violent, destructive and completely hates Charles Xavier. Like the comics, he is invulnerable and has nearly unlimited endurance and healing abilities.

10 ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN

Ultimate Spider-Man was an animated series that aired between 2012 and 2017 on Disney XD.It featured some of the most talented writers in the industry, including the likes of Paul Dini and Brian Michael Bendis. Juggernaut wasn't shy about appearing on the show and was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson.

The Juggernaut in this series was similar to the one in the comics. He was large, unstoppable, violent and incredibly difficult to take down. Like other animated series, the violence was toned down a bit, but not in such a way as to weaken the character.

9 JUGGERMONK

The Cain Marko of Earth-8101 isn't like the one from 616, seeing asMarvel Apesreimagines all of Marvel's greatest characters as either a monkey or an ape. The limited series was written by Karl Kessel with pencils by Ramon Bachs in 2008, and there was a Juggernaut seen briefly in the books.

In theMarvel Apes universe, Juggernaut is a monkey, which is why he is given the rather appropriate moniker, Juggermonk. He isn't seen much in the books, but seeing as asimian is generally stronger than a human, it's safe to say this version of the Juggernaut may be slightly stronger than some of the other versions on this list.

8 CAIN MARKO

The original version of the character, without any modifications or drastic changes, remains one of the most powerful depictions of the Juggernaut. Cain Marko gained the powers of the Juggernaut when he held the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak and with his hate-fueled rage he felt towards Charles Xavier, he embarked on a career of crime, destruction and villainy!

In terms of strength, the Juggernaut is in a class alongside characters including the Hulk! He also has a virtually unstoppable momentum and is immune to almost any attack. He can heal from any wound and is pretty much an unstoppable force capable of wanton destruction wherever he goes.

7 CAIN MARKO (EARTH-9796)

In anotherWhat If...? story, we see what happens if the Juggernaut eliminated the X-Men when he first appeared. By taking them out, he removed the group responsible for keeping the Sentinels in check. What follows is a rapid growth of numbers for the Sentinels, who begin a culling of all mutants on the planet.

After some time, Juggernaut is alone on the planet, though he is able to finally destroy the sentinels. This version of the character is similar to the Earth-616 version, but has the benefit of time and experience on his side. As he is essentially the last living being on Earth (minus some underground survivors), his powers rival no other.

6 ULTIMATE JUGGERNAUT

The Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610) has its own version of the Juggernaut. In this world, the Juggernaut is Cain Marko, but he is a mutant. He wears a helmet though the design is different and rather formidable in appearance. Unlike the original, this version is naturally strong and able to lift 75 tons without the aid of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak.

Once he acquired the Gem, Marko's powers increased exponentially. His power levels blew off the scale, enabling him to lift over 100 tons with ease. Ultimately, he succumbed to a poison dart, which was shot through his helmet's visor. As he lay on his deathbed, he asked Rogue to absorb his powers.
