Lexi Thompson surprised many in late May this year when she confirmed that she plans to retire from golf. Thompson appeared on the golf scene as a 10-year-old and started her professional career at just 15. Although she is still relatively young at 29, Thompson seems to be weary from her long career. Many are questioning whether Thompson is considering changing her decision or if she will participate in Majors next year.
Lexi has the right to play in two Majors this year, but her statement that the 2024 AIG Women's Open will be the last Major of her career raises various questions. In a recent media interview, Thompson chose to reveal her intentions regarding next year’s Majors. She admitted that she is contemplating it but still does not know if she will make that decision.
"I've thought about it. There's a few that I'm obviously in, but yeah, I haven't put too much thought into it."-Lexi Thompson said, as quoted by Golf Monthly.
At 29 years old, Lexi primarily wants to take some time off and make the most of it. Being in the spotlight since the age of 15, surrounded by media, cameras, and the pressure on your shoulders can be quite exhausting. Thompson has felt this firsthand. Years of training, commitments, and major tournaments have left their mark on her, but Thompson still does not want to completely rule out the possibility of a return, at least for the Majors next year.
It seems that Lexi Thompson is still reconsidering her decision, likely unsure if she has made the right choice.
"Going into next year, I'm going to take some time off and just see how I feel, see how I feel mentally and where I'm at. But I know I have a few majors if I want to be able to tee it up there and get my game ready.
But yeah, we'll see. I haven't really thought about this being my last because there's more opportunities next year if I wanted."-Lexi Thompson continued.
Lexi Thompson on playing in the Solheim Cup
Special attention is drawn to the Solheim Cup, where she has had the opportunity to compete six times. Thompson has proudly represented the USA on this grand stage and is eager to do so again. She has never hesitated to express how hungry she is for success and her desire to be part of the team.
Thompson views it as a unique experience that cannot be compared to anything else. The special atmosphere and motivation during such a competition are unparalleled. The Solheim Cup represents a huge departure from every day tournaments, as it offers something quite different from regular golf events.
"Very hungry. Anytime I can represent my country, it's my No. 1 goal to be on this team. That's nothing like it.
I feel like it brings out an energy and talent from all of us players that fans don't see every week. I think they really enjoy it. You're not only playing for yourself."-Lexi Thompson said.
The 29-year-old emphasizes that while golf is an individual sport, playing alongside 12 other women is something entirely different. It is a special feeling to compete with colleagues who are usually your opponents on the golf course and to develop friendships and positive relationships. Thompson also highlighted how wonderful it is to play under the guidance of a captain whom you look up to. She describes this experience as something truly special.
The last three editions haven’t been particularly favorable for the US team, although the most recent event in Spain resulted in a tied score. The European team, playing away in Ohio in 2021, secured a victory with a score of 15-13. Just two years earlier (2019), the Europeans also won while competing in Scotland.
Before that, the US team had won twice, both at home and away.
The next Solheim Cup will be held in Virginia, and the US team is eager to secure a win after the disappointments of the previous three editions. It seems the US team is more motivated than ever and keen for success. The Solheim Cup is a great opportunity to represent the country in the best light.
The first edition of this competition was held in 1990 in Florida. In the 18 editions so far, the US team leads with a record of 10-8, and there has been only one tie, which occurred last year. The European women are also hungry for success, aiming to even the score and take the lead. Both teams have amazing golfers at their disposal, so we will certainly witness an exciting edition of the Solheim Cup this year.
