Poland's recent parliamentary elections delivered a surprising a deal-breaking result, with Donald Tusk’s opposing Civic Coalition poised to take power from the now-ruling Law and Justice (PiS) in coalition with other parties.Poles turned out to vote in record numbers, and migration and security once again became a key battleground of the election campaign. While hostile rhetoric on refugees has dominated since 2015, today half of Poles think immigrants make Poland a better place to live.In a new blog, Karen Hargrave and Sarian Jarosz look back at the narratives that emerged during the campaign, asking what they tell us and what will come next for policy surrounding migration and refugees in Poland: https://buff.ly/3tK6xXm#PolandElections #Immigration #Refugees

The European Union elections have confirmed the European People's Party (EPP) as the strongest political force in the European Parliament. For the next legislative term, it is our responsibility to ensure that the European Union is taking the right path into the future. We will now start to negotiate the key legislative frameworks for the next five years. There is a wide range of crucial topics that we need to deliver on for European citizens. Besides defence and security, economic competitiveness, public health, and social cohesion, migration remains a critical challenge that requires an effective and swift #European solution. Why We Should Be Angry About Re-electing Ursula Von der Leyen? As we reflect on the re-election of Ursula Von der Leyen, it's crucial to consider her alarming stance on migration policy. Since March 2023, Von der Leyen's approach has emphasized militarization and isolation, starkly disregarding human rights. Her vision for the future includes increasing border militarization and building higher walls, perpetuating policies that externalize the EU's responsibilities by paying countries like Libya and Turkey to violently prevent migrants from entering Europe.Under her leadership, Europe has allocated more funds to Frontex, an agency repeatedly involved in illegal pushbacks and violence. Von der Leyen plans to allocate 5.7 billion euros to Frontex to expand its staff to 10,000 agents by 2027 and to invest in new drones, vehicles, ships, planes, and surveillance technologies. When Italy proposed the Albania Plan to build detention centres in Albania for deporting people rescued at sea, Von der Leyen expressed her support. She also welcomed the UK's similar deportation plan to Rwanda. As the chief advocate of the new pact on Migration and Asylum, which passed this year, Von der Leyen aims to fortify Europe's borders further, massively restricting the rights of migrants. This pact gives the green light for agreements with third countries to manage migrants, endorsing border violence and leading to more deaths in the Mediterranean Sea. It includes nothing on sea rescue, human rights observance, or legal and safe passages for migrants. We must critically examine and question the re-election of Ursula Von der Leyen, whose policies threaten human rights and the lives of countless individuals seeking refuge and safety.https://lnkd.in/ebxPsD_kFollow @seawatchcrew #MigrationPolicy #HumanRights #EUPolitics #Frontex #seawatch crew #UrsulaVonDerLeyen #AsylumSeekers #MigrationCrisis #LinkedIn

The border situation is really heating up as we approach the election. As someone who believes in upholding humanitarian immigration, yet recognizes the challenges, I'm curious to hear your thoughts, especially those in border states like Texas. What's your view on tackling this crisis with both compassion and responsibility? Drop your perspective in the comments.#arabic #trending #usa #houston #election #texas #foryou #fyp #politics

The key takeaway from last week’s European Union elections was the success of right-leaning parties in countries such as France and Germany. It was a different story In the Nordic region though. As The Barents Observer reports, left-leaning parties received significant support in Sweden, Finland and Denmark. What's more, three candidates from the Arctic region secured seats in the European Parliament - two of them from northern Finland and one from northern Sweden. One of the successful Finnish candidates was from the far-right Finns Party. However, support for right-leaning parties fell dramatically in both Finland and Sweden. In Denmark, meanwhile, the Green Left, Social Democrat party and Liberals won the most votes. *TRIGGER WARNING* My Key takeaways from the panel "Implications of the New Pact on Migration and Asylum and the European Parliament Elections" by the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity- The new pact is 500 pages of legal text, and in total 1000 pages. The text is so complex that even policymakers do not understand it- There are more rights but also more restrictions for migrants- There are a lot of fake news around explaining the new pact- There will be more screening on the EU border- The force majeure clause, can be used in terms of crisis similar to ex. 2015- One part of the pact is the “resettlement program” and another is the “labour migration program” but it is estimated that they will have little impact - The pact will likely not lead to any improvements in safe and legal access to the EU. It will harden the border. (Quote: “The idea that we are controlling the border to save lives is B.S.”). The pact is not made for refugee protection, it was done to avoid political conflict between EU countries and to reduce support for the far right (aka. domestic politics)-There is a solidarity clause (“responsibility offset”), which means a refugee can be sent back to the EU country they entered. The cost is 30.000 Euro per person per year (20.000 euro in cash and 10.000 euro in materials)- Migration may again be used as a “weapon” in the future- The refugee camps on the EU borders (ex. Canary Islands) are built in such a flexible way that they can be turned into detention camps - There are poor monitoring systems of migration- “Demonizing living conditions” in the refugee camps in EU transit countries can lead to "Shadow Corridors"- There are 600 million youth under 35 yearsin India , who are also looking for work. Partnerships with the EU are being set up. (EU population is only 448 mill!)
